Selected projects

Products, systems, and technical investigations

The projects below are starting points. Each can eventually become its own detailed page with diagrams, photographs, technical history, and lessons learned.

Barcode technology

HD Barcode

Invented a high-density machine-readable symbology and developed core technology for symbol generation, reading, security, and cross-platform deployment.

Machine vision

Barcode verification systems

Led software development for commercial verifier products used to measure and grade linear and two-dimensional barcodes under industry standards.

Algorithms

Reference-grid and grading investigations

Designed controlled tests to understand why nominally equivalent implementations can produce different sampling grids and different quality measurements from nearly identical images.

Software product

ZGANTT

Sole developer of a long-running project-management application maintained across several languages, operating systems, and generations of development technology.

Embedded systems

Microcontroller and FPGA products

Developed products using Microchip PIC, Parallax SX, Intel microcontrollers, Xilinx and Actel FPGAs, custom protocols, device drivers, and hardware-aware software.

Language systems

Compiler development

Developed a compiler for a new programming language, including the particularly difficult transition to a compiler written in the language it compiled.

Legacy systems

DOS TSR and segmented-memory software

Built low-level software in environments where interrupt handling, memory segments, coexistence with other resident programs, and severe resource limits all had to be managed explicitly.

Research engineering

Georgia Tech Research Institute

Contributed broad software and systems experience to applied research projects requiring practical implementation rather than theory alone.
